Zaragoza, Spain is a Host City for the World Cup in 2030: Here's What Traveler's Need to Know (From a Local)

My algorithm has changed. Since we started watching the 2026 World Cup games in my holiday home town of Zaragoza, Spain, we'd been amping and amping our social media to deliver me one fact - Spain is dominating my feed.

And for good reason - the 2026 lineup of stars has been destroying their opponents (we just beat France in the semi-finals as I write this) and Unai Simon is a beast in the goal post. I'm proud to wear red and yellow.

I'm even more proud to state that my once quiet, authentic home away in Zaragoza is about to be the scene of a madness beyond Semana Santa, beyond their annual Pilar Festival in October - because they will be hosting games at La Romareda stadium in the next World Cup in 2030.

Zaragoza will be among 8 Spanish cities to host, alongside Portugal, Morocco, and three starting games in South America (Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina) to celebrate the 100th year of FIFA's World Cup.

Man, am I excited.

Let me share with you how the city will be transforming, how it has already been getting ready, and how to prepare yourself as a traveler to the Aragonese city for the big match.

Hola, I'm Maria!

Mark your calendars, my holiday home of Zaragoza, Spain is one of the host cities for World Cup 2030!

Where: La Romareda Stadium

When: Sometime between June 8 to July 21, 2030

It may be too soon to book, but here are some guides to get your planning started:

Vamos España!

When is World Cup 2030 Happening?

Because of the added games and regions for the big centennial celebration, the matches are slated for June 8 to July 21, 2030.

I'm not certain at this point what dates the Zaragoza games will be, but I'll definitely keep this updated.

The last time Spain hosted the World Cup was in 1982!

Where to Stay in Zaragoza for the World Cup 2030

Zaragoza is a compact city easily connected by public transportation so as long as you are staying somewhere near the historic center, you're golden.

For hotels, you'll want to book far in advance - and because it is June and July I have to say, air conditioning is NON-NEGOTIABLE.

I've just returned from June and July in Zaragoza and the daily temps were up to 108 degrees. It is a dry heat, but still very very hot. I suspect the matches might be later in the evening to accommodate global broadcasts and time zones, but nevertheless your hotel needs to be your day time refuge, so get that AC.

For the nicest hotel in town, it is without a doubt the NH Gran Hotel. Typically averaging around $90-150 per night, I suspect rates will be through the roof. Maybe Javier Bardem will come? Jose Andres? I'll camp out in their lobby for a chance to meet Jose Andres.

For more middle-ground lodging, I've got a whole write up on where to stay here:

I do think that more luxury-style hotels will pop up on the scene in the next four years, and that Zaragoza will expand its offerings for a higher class of travelers, but for now, Zaragoza has a ton of mid range hotels that are very lovely and comfortable. Just don't forget the AC.

Where is the Zaragoza World Cup Match Happening?

La Romareda stadium is just south of the Historic Center, just steps off of the lightrail (Tranvia). It sits across from the Parque Grande, and adjacent to a plaza full of bars that are always bumping for game time.

The historic Romareda Stadium was recently bulldozed in 2025 and they have been rebuilding it, with plans to open for game play in 2027. I've seen the progress, and it's looking really good!

In the meantime, the local team, Real Zaragoza, is playing at an off-site pitch outside the city until the rebuild is complete.

The stadium is located at the Romareda Tranvia stop.

Transportation Around the City

As of right now, Zaragoza is experiencing a major upswing in tourism. I'm seeing buses full of tourists come in for the day, whereas five years ago when I moved in, seeing one small group a week would be rare.

Now, a once-quiet tram ride is full of passengers (most locals) but the city, I think, is seeing a huge increase in residents. Just this summer we met a whole group expats from the States who chose Zaragoza specifically to relocate their lives. The word is out and the infrastructure is having to grow with it.

Right now, expect easy transport with the tram line and buses. Walking is very easy from all city locations, or there are also bike rentals around town.

To get a tram and bus pass, (five years ago) we had to purchase them at the tourism offices located in Plaza España, by the Mercado Central, or by the currently under renovation Goya museum by the Plaza del Pilar. Use this pass by tapping on when you get on a bus or tram - very simple. Top it off as needed at tram stops or on some of the tram cars.

Plan to walk most places though, with the Gran Via spanning the length of the tram line from Plaza España down to Romareda and beyond.

Parking Logistics

If you come to the city with a car, I highly recommend leaving it parked. You won't need it in the city, and in fact it is quite a bother with one way streets and city traffic if you plan on trying to navigate around.

Parking garages are everywhere and not terribly expensive. Buy a weekly parking pass for discounts.

Pro Tip: rent the smallest vehicle you can - the garages can be tight and hard to maneuver for folks not used to garages in Europe.

Where to Watch the Game If You Don't Have Tickets

I've seen the prices for the matches in 2026. I'm pretty sure I can't afford a seat. Unless Madam Mayor you want to get this writer one??

For the 2026 games the Plaza España bar called Gran Cafe Zaragozano was a huge hit with my family and friends. They have amazingly thin, chippy-like torreznos for noshing on during the games and the bar had the whole place equipped for game viewing with several TVs and projector screens both upstairs and down.

Another good spot to watch is the food hall at the Caesar Augustus food court next door or any of the pubs around town.

However, the most lively atmosphere, and undoubtedly set to happen again for 2030, is the massive gathering of people in the Plaza del Pilar. They rolled this out for the last few games.

They set up scaffolding and a giant LED wall for all the Spain matches. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people showed up for the games wearing flags on their faces and as capes, with an atmosphere that I'm really sad to have missed because we headed back to the US before the quarterfinals match.

What Can I Do in the City Before or After Games?

Zaragoza's Pilar with flowers and trees

For this, I recommend the typical circuit:

  • Plaza del Pilar

  • La Seo

  • Aljaferia

  • Roman Ruins

  • Mercado Central

Then, out of town:

Make time to do the Spanish thing - tardeo (basically a longwinded tapas and drinking day), and of course tapas crawls.

Other Need to Know Notes for Zaragoza Travel

Summer in Spain is going to be downright hot. And in four years, I can only imagine what the global climate will look like.

Here's some tips to prepare:

Also, I 100% recommend buying your jersey or Spain kit in advance. At the start of the tournament, we found the away jerseys only in a few stores, didn't buy one, then for the next many weeks went looking everywhere. Don't be disappointed, get your kit early!!!
