Wine Tasting Along Spain's Somontano Wine Route

Writer's picture: Maria DiCiccoMaria DiCicco

Although relatively unknown to the outside world of wine tasters, Somontano is a very popular wine-producing region in Spain near Aragon's hub of Huesca.

Living in Zaragoza since 2021, I've had the pleasure of exploring many of the Aragonese wine routes, which includes:

  • Navarra

  • Calatayud

  • Cariñena

  • Campo de Borja

  • Somontano

and further afoot in Logroño, Rioja.

I've detailed a bit of my wine tasting experiences in my separate guide to Day Trips from Zaragoza if you'd like to learn more. Meanwhile, let's learn more about Somontano.

Where is Somontano

Just under 2 hours from Zaragoza and even less from Huesca, Somontano connects through the town of Barbastro and on towards the medieval hill top town of Alquezar, which is a lovely spot to seek tranquility and a nice lunch.

A pleasant and flat drive through narrow one lane roads, the Somontano wine region is an excellent addition to any road trip to/from the Pyrenees, which sits a little over an hour to the North.

My husband, daughter and I had just ventured from a two night stay in the winter wonderland of Benasque, only an hour or so North through the gorges of Cangosto de Ventamillo, and around mountain valleys leading us to Barbastro, the beginning of the Somontano Wine Route.

We drove to three vineyards to sample their wines in Somontano.

Below I'll share a bit about the wine, where to taste, and tours you can participate in.

Tastings are typically very affordable but must be arranged in advance; drop ins are not usually welcomed in Spain.

Take a tour or go on your own by emailing or calling the individual properties in advance. Many also offer online booking forms.

Sometimes you can drop in and simply ask if they will give you a tasting, but it depends on the property and whether they have the time for you.

In my experience in Somontano, we had not made plans but I had done enough research to know where I wanted to drop in. We called minutes before our visit for one, and simply knocked on the door for two others. This was met with mixed response, but mostly courteous and agile enough to help us.

Purchasing Wine in Somontano

Like the rest of Aragon's wine regions, Somontano is quite affordable and you can expect most bottles to cost 5-15 euros off the shelf for home consumption. Purchasing direct from the source is always the best bet!

For this, I highly recommend bringing a wine suitcase along with you, like the ones sold by VinGardeValise. I've been using my wine suitcase since 2021, and I can't tell you how many various uses I have had for it - especially on a day in Spanish wine country.

Types of Wine to Expect in Somontano

Surprisingly, Gewurztraminer and Reisling are quite popular here. They are light bodied and drier than their German cousins. Chardonnay is also readily available in Somontano.

The typical red from Somontano may involve Tempranillo grapes, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Moristel is the most unique of the grape varieties in Somontano, which produces a light-bodied red wine. It is often blended with Syrah, or any of the above grapes.

Moristel to me, was kind of like tasting a Pinot Noir, but what do I know. They didn't like that suggestion when I said it! I guess I have more to learn.

The Bodegas I Visited Along the Somontano Wine Route

Zooming in on a map, I saw this winery that looked like it was situated right in town. They were offering free tastings from 10am-2pm in their shop, so I figured this was a good bet for just dropping in.

I was right!

The family owned business was incredibly friendly and they provided us with excellent service. We enjoyed a few samples and went on our merry way.

It was a lovely property and I'd definitely recommend this for anyone looking to drop in and see what Somontano is all about, or learn about their pre-arranged visitor options here.

Lalanne has a beautiful property equipped for tourism, but unfortunately we were running against the clock with their closing time and couldn't take a tour.

Lalanne is a brilliant spot for a seemingly endless tasting suited to your palate. We tried only dry wines (seco) per my prompting, and ended up taking home several bottles.

The shop was just closing but they opened their doors to us with kindness. You can arrange a tour in advance with them by visiting their website.

Finally, on our tour de force just showing up unexpected at wineries that day, we popped literally across the street from Lalanne to the omnipresent Viñas del Vero winery.

I say this because their wines seem to be on every table in the region, often poured as the vino de la casa, but that doesn't dictate anything about their quality.

We enjoyed prompt and informative service, despite our disruption to their normal operations, and took home a case of wine as our prize.

Expect lots of varieties of white wines here, including my favorite - the Clarion. You better believe that one came home to the US with me in my wine suitcase!

As a visitor, you may drop in for a glass of wine from their bar counter, or you may arrange for a tour of the facility, followed by a tasting. Visitor Information can be found here.
